Pewamo Fire Department Working with Village to Relocate Fire Station

We’d like to share some very exciting news regarding the future of the Pewamo Fire Department.

The department has served the Village of Pewamo and surrounding areas for nearly forty years from its current site located at the corner of State and Main Streets.  In those years the requirements and services provided by the department have changed significantly and so has the equipment and manpower.  They had definitely outgrown the site, and finding a solution to this problem was an ongoing concern.

Recently, the Village of Pewamo was able to purchase the property and buildings Devereaux Sawmill owned on Main Street in Pewamo.  This site will be converted to our new Fire Station, increasing capacity by more than 400%!  We are very grateful to Devereaux Sawmill for agreeing to sell at a price that is more than fair and to Lyons Township who committed a significant amount towards the purchase.  However, it is a site that will need considerable work.

The agreement with Lyons Township requires that the Village of Pewamo provide a site that will meet the needs of the fire department, including housing of equipment and training facilities.
A  Master Plan has been created for the work needed.  This will be a joint effort between the Village and the Fire Department.  The hope is that the work will be done as funds become available.  Unfortunately, though, Village funds will be limited due to recent infrastructure projects that exceeded $2,000,000.  The Village was fortunate to have sold the former fire station and those funds will be reinvested into the new site.  The Pewamo Fire Department will continue to host their annual golf outing, which is an ongoing event that supports the needs of the department.

It's important to recognize that while the Village of Pewamo is bearing the majority of the costs, the Pewamo Fire Department serves many who live beyond the Village limits.  Therefore, due to the anticipated expense of this expansive project, we are seeking  potential donors in hopes of reaching our goals!  If you wish to make a donation to help fund the renovation of the new station, we would greatly appreciate it.

The Village of Pewamo and Pewamo Fire Department continue to be committed to the safety and well being of those we serve.   We thank you for your consideration in joining this effort!

Donations may be made payable to the Village of Pewamo.

Pewamo Mural:

The Village of Pewamo was proud to unveil a new addition to Sesquicentennial Park at Block Party 2014.  Due to generous donations received, the Village was able to commission Dan Arens of Westphalia to create a historic mural of the Pewamo Depot.   Included in the mural is a tribute to our namesake, Chief Pewamo.  We are very grateful to Dan and to the numerous benefactors who made this possible.

Here's a little secret....Dan hides a mouse in the murals he creates!  Have you found the one hidden in the Pewamo mural?

And if you travel east to Fowler you can see another mural created by Dan, which was unveiled in the fall of 2015.  Located on the north side of the Becker Furniture building, it's a beautiful display that celebrates Fowler's history and the Fred Meijer CIS Trail.  The mural is visible from the trail, and also has a hidden mouse.  Good luck finding it!

Originally settled in 1834, the Village of Pewamo was incorporated in 1859, and proudly celebrated its Sesquicentennial in 2009.   Pewamo prides itself as a family friendly, zoned community where you can enjoy small town living, but still have easy access to the amenities offered by cities such as Lansing and Grand Rapids.
Recreation opportunities abound in Pewamo.  We have a nine acre Village park with ball fields, tennis courts, pavilions and lots of playground equipment!  We are very excited to have the Fred Meijer CIS Trail passing through Pewamo.  We invite you to start your trail journey here or to stop and visit as you enjoy the trail.  We have a beautiful trailhead, which is fashioned after the original depot. There are restrooms, picnic tables and a drinking fountain, which we hope will allow you to take a moment to rest and refresh.

Pewamo is also happy to have Huckleberry Creek Golf Course, which is only a short distance north of town and offers 18 holes of scenic golf!   As a part of the P-W School District, Pewamo is proud of the educational opportunities they are able to offer.  The Village is home to two elementary schools, one public and one private Catholic school.  St. Joseph Catholic School is a 1st through 8th grade facility, which is fully accredited. Recently P-W Schools celebrated national recognition when U.S. News & World Report announced top high schools in the nation.

P-W High School was selected as a "Silver Medalist" (in the top 505).  To put this in perspective, P-W was in the top 3% of high schools in the nation, and since then they have received more esteemed accolades and recognition in the field of education.

Pewamo Poem Minimize

I like to live in a little town, where
the trees meet across the street.
Where you wave your hand and say
"Hello" to everyone you meet.
I like to stand for a moment
outside the grocery store.
And listen to the friendly gossip
of the folks that live next door.
For life is interwoven
with the friends we learn to know.
And we hear their joys and sorrows
as we daily come and go.
I like to live in a little town.
I care no more to roam.
For every house in Pewamo
is more than a house...its home.
